These ethnographers obviously gained their knowledge from Southern Paiute tribal members who continue the salt song tradition. As a way to pass on the traditions she carries, Vivienne Jake asked me to assist her in recording her oral history. She shares stories from traditional times as well as ones that reflect the impacts of colonization on her people. Vivienne is recording and writing her personal stories primarily for her own family and tribe, and some of her stories, like her experiences in boarding school and the importance of the salt songs, will be shared with a wider audience for education and healing. According to many Southern Paiute, the salt songs need to be documented to educate young Paiute members about their meaning, significance, history, locations, and purpose. The prophecies of the salt songs are extremely important, and Vivienne plans to organize singing ceremonies at boarding schools and undocumented massacre sites to help heal the Paiute dead who have not had their proper right of passage.
